Driving Licences

Provisional agreement: B licence increased to 4.25 t for motor caravans.

The European Parliament and the Council have reached a provisional agreement on the new EU driving licence rules which features a breakthrough for motor caravans: for all motor caravans, the weight limit of driving licence category B will be increased to 4.25 tonnes provided a training or test has been completed. This is a special regulation for motor caravans, a similar provision is only foreseen as well for emergency vehicles. The new rules also promote the use of alternatively fuelled vehicles which can be driven with a B driving licence up to 4.25 tonnes two years after the B licence has been acquired.

The ECF and its members have been campaigning for the upgrade of the B licence of caravans and motor caravans for over 20 years. The ECF had already campaigned for the extension of the B driving licence for motor caravans during the negotiations for the 3rd Driving Licence Directive. At that time (2006), only the extension of the B driving licence for passenger car-trailer-combinations up to 4.25 tonnes (B96) was approved.

The amendment of the EU Driving Licence Directive offers the opportunity to make nature-oriented, sustainable and family-friendly holidays in a motorhome even more accessible for millions of people – especially for young and future generations – and thus makes a positive contribution to the development of tourism in Germany and Europe. The new provision for motor caravans will – most likely – be applicable up from 2029.
